Coolum Beach- New Whale Platform

Coolum Beach- New Whale Platform

John and Michelle Roderick were amungst the Community representatives and whale watching enthusiasts at second bay this week to inspect the site of the whale watching platform in Coolum Beach

WHALE watchers are set to flock to Coolum when a new viewing platform is built. A small timber deck is to be installed at Second Bay to entice locals and tourists.

Funds have been set aside for 11 coastal communities in the country as part of the Commonwealth Government’s whale trail initiative.

The viewing platform will be located at the Second Bay car park between Point Arkwright and Point Perry – an ideal spot to view the migration of humpback whales during the winter season.

The platform will be durable, made of hardwood timber with stainless steel fittings.

Its height will be determined to ensure a clear view through and over existing vegetation, but is expected to be about 80-120cm off ground level.

Information on migratory whales and local fauna will be provided in partnership with the local coast care group.
