Dave’s Diary – Coolum Beach Surf Club

Here is an extract from Dave’s Diary a monthly insight into the Coolum Beach Surf Club.  This month features Eric Llyod who started the agency and John Roderick who is currently president of Surf Life Saving and Sales Agent at Coolum Beach Real Estate.

Eric-Llyod-coolum-beach-real-estateBack in the 70’s the launching of a new surf boat was a grand occasion. This boat sponsored by Eric Lloyd was built by a local boat builder on the Sunshine Coast. Er-ic Lloyd was a state politician who retired to the Coolum area and set up the business Eric Lloyd Real Es-tate which operated from the building now home to President John Roderick’s place of employment, Coolum Beach Real Estate.
Eric was a great supporter of the Coolum Beach SLSC and sponsored a number of surf boats. Pictured with Eric is the Club Captain of the time; Peter McWhirter. Peter was a young teenager and went on to play 5/8 in the last Queensland Rugby League team before the format was changed to State of Origin. Peter played for Valleys in Brisbane. He was also a very good oarsman rowing with the legendary sweep Keith “Spaz” Hurst and other Club stalwarts John Ellingsen, Phill Adams and Tim Bell. This crew went on to win a Queensland gold medal, unfortunately representing Noosa SLSC, but that is another story…
Also in this photo at the far left was a Club President Alan Beesley and local identity Vic Sims.
This photo was taken by Alf Jolly a very passionate club supporter and also Club President, but unfortu-nately not a great photographer and many of the Club Members around the boat are not clear, however in no particular order the ones I can recognise are: Paul Norman, John Markwell, John Ellingsen, Ray “Sting” Zillman, Stephen “Poodles” Kemp, Brian Clem, Terry Kemp, Richard Barrie, Paul Gallagher, Cobber Doyle, Peter Carmen, Paul Dunning.
